Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is a new universal standard for communications technology, designed to carry voice (VoIP), video, text and data efficiently over the Internet. SIP is becoming increasingly popular due to its enhanced functionality and inherent benefits when compared with the other telephone communication protocols currently in use. Utilising the Internet Protocol (IP), SIP telephones convert speech into data packets that are compressed and transferred over the Internet to the recipient of the data who reverses the process to hear the call. SIP is the next logical step in the evolution of voice communications as routing voice calls over the Internet provides additional features over and above ISDN and analogue lines
